June 13, 2021, there was a call for some rain, but we didn't let the chance stop us from finally going out to Rittman, Ohio to pay respects at the Western Reserve National Cemetery. Military service members are interred here. There are so many.
Columbarium walls for cremated remains |
What struck me as I walked amongst the headstones, and read the names, read the birth and death years, was that most were survivors of war, only now gone after living to old age.
WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War.
Mixed in are now young military servers who have died during Afghanistan and Iraq wars.
A mix of historic war survivors and modern war casualties.
After a while, we circled back out of the cemetery, and headed a short ways to Wayback Burgers in Wadsworth. It was really good food and milkshakes. We hopped on US-224 all the way back home with a break at DD in Canfield.
The freedom of the open road is paved with headstones.
